A Short "Who We Are"
Founded in 1949, the Hawaiian Astronomical Society is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting amateur astronomy in Hawaii. We have three public star parties every lunar month to share the skies with anyone who wishes to join us. There is no charge for our public star parties. There is also a members-only star party at our dark sky site once a month.
Our membership includes both visual astronomers, and a growing contingent of astro-photographers.
We enjoy sharing our Hawaiian skies with the children and adults of Hawaii. We offer our services free of charge to public and private schools, as well as to groups like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. To schedule a private star party, click here.
The Hawaiian Astronomical Society is affiliated with the Astronomical League and the Night Sky Network. Membership in HAS is open to all. One benefit of membership is the availability of rental telescopes. For more information, go here.
Since HAS is a member of the Night Sky Network, HAS Club members must “Register” individually on the NSN to be able to access all the features available. We encourage all club members to register. To register go to this NSN link.

Club star party at Dillingham Airfield
Club members and invited guests only, please. Our Club Members Only star parties are a little different than our public parties. Please read our Club Members Only Star Party information page so you know what to expect.
Please note the following items that are part of the agreement to let us use the airfield for our star parties.
- The gate to the airfield is locked at around 7:00 pm so you must be in the viewing area before then (we suggest that you plan to be there at 6:30 pm to allow for traffic delays). The gate will be opened at scheduled times to allow people to leave - usually at 8:30 pm, 10:30 pm and midnight (when everyone must leave). Check with the Board-Member-In-Charge for that night's schedule.
- We are also required to have the driver of every vehicle sign in with the Board-Member-In-Charge. We are required to record the vehicle manufacturer, license plate driver's name and number of people in the car.
- Smoking is not allowed (fire danger), no alcohol and also no pets. Mahalo for your kokua.
